Home Organization 101: Easy Steps to a Clutter Free Home

Filed under: Balancing it All, Being A WAHM, Time Management — workathomemom at 5:06 pm on Tuesday, May 26, 2009

When you first move into your home it seems like you have so much space.  As the years pass, you might find yourself becoming a pack rat.  What are you going to do with all the stuff you have accumulated?  Perhaps it’s time to weed out the unnecessary items and organize your home.

Home organization is a step-by-step process.  It will take more than a day or even a week to get everything to a manageable level, but once you do staying organized is an easier task.  If you have a family, enlist their help.  They can pitch in and learn a thing or two about controlling clutter in their life.

1. Start with the high traffic areas.  The living room and kitchen are usually the two most used rooms in the house.  Everything gets dropped on a counter or the couch in these two places.  Concentrate on getting everything set up the way that you like it before moving on to another room.

2. Use storage containers.  Over the years, the style of storage containers has upgraded to be pretty as well as functional.  Instead of storing containers in stacks in the garage, purchase ones that match your décor in each room and integrate them so that no one would even notice they were being used for storage.

3. Divide items into categories.  You can use heavy duty trash bags for this part.  Everything that you find can go into a pile: KEEP, THROW AWAY, GIVE AWAY, and RELOCATE.  Items that will stay in that room are to keep.  Things that you don’t need or are broken can be thrown away.  Clothes or furniture still in great condition can be donated and scheduled for pickup by the Veteran’s association or Goodwill.  Anything that definitely belongs in another room can be labeled for relocation when you get to that room.

4. Remove everything from drawers and cabinets.  This is a time-consuming process but it is easier to start with an empty space and fill it instead of simply pushing things around.  If you line things up on the counter, someone else can help by putting the items in some type of order.

5. Make use of all of your available space.  In the kitchen, for example, appliances or extra containers can be stored on top of the cabinets provided they don’t extend all the way to the ceiling.  That’s extra storage space without benefit of a storage container.  Also use the top of the refrigerator for cereal boxes and breakfast food like boxes of instant oatmeal or grits.  In the bedroom, shoes and winter clothes can go into flat storage bins that slide easily under the bed or the dresser.

6. Label your containers.  Use tape and a permanent marker to identify the contents of your storage containers.  Avoid writing on the actual container in case they are reused and the contents are changed.  Labeling also makes for easy identification if you decide to sell or give away a container of books or something.  You won’t have to open each container to locate them.

Organizing your entire house takes time.  But, once it is done, returning everything you use to its proper place will maintain that same level of organization.

Seven Ways the Internet Can Help with Homeschooling

Filed under: Curriculum for Homeschooling, Homeschooling — workathomemom at 4:34 pm on Monday, May 18, 2009

Homeschooling and the Internet - many consider the two to be a match made in heaven.  In fact, those who homeschool would be hard pressed to do so without the Internet.  The following seven ways explain how to use the Internet with homeschooling, but there are many more.

1.  Find state laws concerning homeschooling.  One of the first ways the Internet can help with homeschooling is by giving parents access to homeschool laws for their state.  Knowing the laws will prepare homeschool families to meet their state’s requirements so they can comply with them.

2.  If you’re new to homeschooling, you’ll most likely need to have support during the year.  The Internet is a great place to find support.  Not only can you find online homeschooling groups, but your local group will probably use the Internet to communicate, especially if the members are spread out over a large area.

3.  Purchasing curriculum is a major undertaking every year.  Use the Internet first to research curriculum and compare prices before buying.  Besides going to the curriculum manufacturer’s websites, look for used curriculum on places such as eBay and half.com.  If you purchase materials online it will be delivered right to your door instead of having to drive around trying to find it.

4.  Once you have your curriculum, you may want to supplement it with handouts, worksheets, and puzzles.  These are easily accessible on the Internet.  And, most of the materials you find on the Internet are either free, or very inexpensive.  Use common search engines like Google, Yahooligans, or Ask Jeeves Kids to find the items you need.

5.  Some children are interested in music and would like to learn more about it.  Resources found online would be great for this child.  Not only can you find free sheet music online for nearly any instrument, you can also learn about the composers who wrote that music.  There are even websites that can teach your child how to create music.

6.  If your child is looking for specific information about their favorite subject?  You can run to the library, or if you have Internet access, your child should be able to find anything they could ever hope to learn online.  A couple of good research sites would include Discovery.com, HistoryChannel.com, and PBS.com.

7.  Does your child need to learn something that you don’t feel comfortable teaching?  You could either find out if there are private tutors for that subject in your area, or you may be able to find an online tutorial.

As you can see, the Internet can be extremely useful if you homeschool.  These seven ideas for using the Internet are not exhaustive.  All it takes is a little bit of imagination and you’ll be able to find other ways that you can use it, as well.  Take some time, do some searching, and you’ll see that homeschooling and the Internet are indeed a match made in heaven.

3 Reasons Why You Should Add Adsense to Your Website

Filed under: Business Tools, Google Adsense and Adwords — workathomemom at 4:09 pm on Thursday, May 14, 2009

First, let's look at how adsense works.

The concept is really simple, if you think about it. You put script on your website that you get from Google and each time your page is accessed, the java script will pull advertisements from the Adsense program. The ads are matched to target the content on your webpage. If a visitor clicks on an advertisement, you earn a portion of the money that the advertiser is paying the Google for the click.

Google's search engine is the one handling all the tracking and payments, providing an easy way for you to display content-sensitive and targeted ads without having the hassle to solicit advertisers, collect funds, monitor the clicks and statistics which could be a very time-consuming task in itself.

The first reason why Adsense is essential for website owners is because it understanding the needs of publishers and webmasters. The ads are fully customizable and you as webmaster have the choice of many  different types of text ad formats to better complement your website and fit your webpage layout.

The different formatting enables the site owners the possibility of more click through from visitors who may or may not be aware of what they are clicking on. It can also appeal to the people visiting making them take that next step of looking up what it is all about. This is a win/win situation you make money on each click and Google makes money from the advertisers for each click.

The second reason is the ability for you to track not only how your sites are progressing but also the earnings based on your-defined channels. The recent improvements in the Googles search engines gives you the capability to monitor how your ads are performing using customizable reports that has the capacity to detail page impressions, clicks and click-through rates. You and publishers can now track specific ad formats, colors and pages within a website. Trends are also easily spotted.

Everything is done in real-time reporting, changes made can be assessed quickly. There is time to sort out the contents that people are making the most clicks on. The ever-changing demands can be met while generating cash for the webmasters and publishers. The more flexible tools are also allowing webmasters to group web pages by URL, domain, ad type or category, which will provide them some accurate insight on which pages, ads and domains are performing best.

The third and final reason is that the advertisers have realized the benefits associated with having their ads served on individual websites. Increasing the possibility that a prospective web surfer will have an interest in their product and services. All because of the content of your website and its constant maintenance.

Adsense is all about targeted content, the more targeted your content is, the more target the search engines’ ads will be. There are some web masters and publishers who are focused more on their site contents and how best to maintain them to generate ad profits. This is the part where the effectiveness of adsense is working at its best.

There was a time when people were not yet aware of the money that could be achieved from advertisements. The cash generated back then came in more by luck then by webmasters actually working on building sites that would bring money in on purpose.
